New quality standards for AI research papers create controversy in the academic community.

Arxiv administrators announced stricter submission guidelines for AI and machine learning papers, specifically targeting what they term “low-effort submissions” and papers with excessive promotional language.

The move comes as submissions have exploded — with AI papers now making up over 60% of daily submissions to the popular preprint server. The backlog has grown exponentially, and reviewers are drowning in papers that read more like product announcements than research.

Critics argue the standards could inadvertently block legitimate research from smaller institutions or researchers without institutional affiliations. Supporters say the move was overdue to maintain academic rigor.

Either way, the signal-to-noise ratio problem in AI research just got a lot more official.
